Okay so I have been barrel racing at local shows for the past seven years and was wondering how to get started into doing bigger stuff! I have checked out NLBRA for next year but was wondering what else I could do or join to get the experience and become more advanced. Thank you i'll take any advice!!!

 Bumping this back up...

IBRA and NBHA, BBR are all options outside of rodeo.

Start with NBHA, IBRA, go to local jackpots especially ones that are overly promoted with a lot of competition! If you're consistently in the money and consistent overall, horse is seasoned and rodeo is your thing, get a permit and start going! :)

Some people hate doing gymkhanas. I personally think it's an amazing tool for starting a horse. It's not competitive beyond yourself. It's not like your going to win money so you can just do your thing without getting inside your own head. It also works on 'horsemanship' with the random patterns most people don't practice which emphasizes control and partnership.
Not sure if you meant local shows as in gymkhanas? Or local shows as in local jackpots.

But NBHA and IBRA are pretty competitive too.

Unless you have a futurity horse then its a whole other ball game of only exhibitions in order to haul before hitting the futurities.

Thanks a lot guys!!! And once I get there after getting more experience how do you apply for a rodeo permit?? I didn't grow up in a rodeo family so I'm pursuing my goal on my own even if it will take awhile! Thanks!
