We have owned this mare for 5 years (she is 8 this year) and she has also been a real pleasure to ride (said very sarcastically.)  I always save her for last because she wears me out.  I have been telling him for the last 2-3 years that I bet she is having some female issues but he wouldn't really look into it until our shoer suggested it a couple of months ago.

Anyway he takes her to the vet last week and she has a pretty good sized cyst on one of her overies.  Vet didn't want to do anything about it then but wanted her to ovulate one more time to see if it went down.  We take her back on the 25th for a recheck.

I really do not want to use regumate.  In the passed what has worked great for my mares are the cattel implants but most vets are not using them anymore.    I have a really good feeling that the cyst will still be there when we recheck.  What has worked for everyone?

If the cyst is gone and she is just a totally witch what can we try on her?  This mare is a worker and will do pretty much whatever you ask without blinking an eye so she is so worth trying different things.  I just wish he would have listened to me a few years ago... MEN!!!

I know quite a few people who have had good results using Mare Magic.

Had a recheck on this mare today.  Cyst is still there and has not gone down in size at all.

Vet gave her shot of HCG and said this should help but was not a for sure thing.  I asked what was the next step if the cyst is still there and she really didn't know but was going to consult with some other vets.  She said worse case we would take the ovary out.

Has anyone had any experience with cysts that would not go away?  If so what did you do for it?

If it a one time thing, ask your vet about giving her a shot of Lutalayse to encourage ovulation, or at least soften it. My vet would do this and come back to or three days later to massage it and get it to release.

This is the ONLY thing that worked for my mare but 21 days later she would come in to heat like gangbusters with yet another enlarged, multiple follicle "cyst" , so it was rinse and repeat. Regumate (double dose and more) didn't work, herbs didn't work, acupuncture didn't work, progesterone shots didn't work and implants didn't work. I have very good reason to believe she had been implanted before I got her, and it helps for awhile, but when it wears off, the problem comes back WORSE!

I ended up spaying her and it was the best thing I could have done. Hopefully yours is a one time deal and you won't have to go to the extremes that I did.
