choking on oats?

Has anyone heard of horses choking on oats and can only eat a certain grain that doesn't contain oats? I'm wondering if this is an indicator of an underlining health issue or something that will cause problems for this horse in the future?

According to my vet, they are less likely to choke on oats b/c they do not pack in the esophagus like pelleted feed. However, my mare choked on them and it was one of the worst of her choking episodes.
A horse that is prone to choke should be scoped to see what the cause is, but other than feeding issues and possible inhalation leading to pneumonia, I don't know of any other problems that it would cause. Well, death. If not treated. But that's obvious, right?
Re-reading your post, my assumption would be that adding oats to the horse's soaked mash
(pelleted feed in water
) might be enough to cause it to choke. This would have been the case with my bad choker anyway...

Horses that gobble their food often choke sometime mildly & something it's really bad. It you will put rocks about the size of you fist in their feed it helps. They have to pick through the rocks to pick up their feed & can't get huge mouth fulls
