A Gopher's Worst Nightmare Posts: 5094 Location: Southern Oregon	I need some help. I have delt with all sorts of hoof issue thought out my many many years of owning horses. My 6 year old mare has what looks like a graveled abscess trying to push though the bottom of her hoof. She was off a tich on and off earlier this summer, but nothing major. No heat or swelling ect. I would give her a couple days off and she was fine. 6 weeks ago she "blew" a whole in the bottom of her front hoof. The whole is deep about an 1-1.5 inch deep and 2 inches wide be 1 inch width. We thought that was the end of it. I have been keeping it super dry and super clean with little to no issues. I clean it out two to three times a day and it seems to bug her. Today my farrier was out and it REALLY seemed to bug her. Im looking for some ideas and or stories and pics on graveled abscess? Are x-rays a must? I have her scheduled for one, but I dont want to be throwing my money away.

Off the Wall Wacky Posts: 2981 Location: Louisiana	My fiance's team roping partner had a horse with what they called a "moving abscess" I think. It was in the sole of his foot and it had been bothering him for a long time. He'd be cripple, then seem fine, then get cripple again, he just seemed very tender-footed. The farrier told him he thought that's what it was and said it'd like walking with a rock in your shoe. It wouldn't heal completely or bust out. They ended up having the vet and farrier coming out the same day and they actually cut his sole out. Of course they packed it with meds and wrapped it up really good. I know they had to change it every day or so. I haven't seen them since our last rodeo, but they said he was healing well and walking much better with about 2 weeks to go before they could ride him.

The Advice Guru Posts: 6419	I had one similar took her to the vet had X-rays had it dug out 8 months later in the exact same spot it blew at the cornet band. I would try poulticing it I have a chronic abscesser, she foundered really bad, she has had X-rays, but I found she responds to glycerine and Epsom salts with tea tree oil as the poultice, I soak her foot in Apple cider vinegar 1 part to 3 parts warm water, then poultice change every 3 days. On day three I have to reopen the abscess as the sole starts growing over. I did speak to the vet and he says it is very common for the foot to heal prior to the abscess being completely gone. If you are going to xray soak the foot in iodine for a few days first. The iodine will show the tracts of the abscess better
