Mystery abcess

Today I went out to check my mares who are on pasture and big bales and I discoved one of my mares had a huge abcess near her tail head that had busted open and drained down her leg. She was fine yesterday, no sign of it. Then today all the crud running down her leg and a huge stinky wound. Honestly this is the nastiest smelling wound I've ever seen and I am really concerned about what may have caused it. I mangeaged to flush it out pretty good and got a fair amount of chunks out it. It is really deep, I'm going to keep flushing it and Monday she'll go to the vet so I can see exactly how far it goes. I was wondering if anyone else has had strange abcesses show up.

Maybe she rubbed on something and got a thorn embedded under the skin or rolled on one...finally worked it's way outside. ..I'd keep flushing it out ...maybe dress it with some vetericyn or something to clean n kill the bacteria...it may go deeper than it looks and need some antibiotics. ..let us know what the vet says!

Have the vet check that foreign object isn't still in there.
