I got a new mare yesterday. She is 8yo, great bloodlines. Dead broke, was started on the pattern and ready to be exhibitioned. The people I bought her from didn't do much with her for the past 2 years, she was pretty much a pasture pet. Lots of treats and very minimal riding later, she is HUGE. My plan with her is to bring her back into working shape and get her back going on the pattern. The exercise will do a lot for her I'm sure but feed wise I'm at a lost as to what to do. I'm usually looking to put weight ON one, not take if off.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

free choice low calorie, low sugar hay from a slow feeder.

Lots of long trotting, low starch feed 3 lbs a day, grass hay. Restricted turn out.

A couple of mine are rather healthy lol and I do what I can to try to keep them fit. I do the above, but they still get a flake of alfalfa and over night pasture time.

I wouldn't give any grain. If you have supplements to give then maybe a handful of Timothy pellets but other than that grass/grass hay and exercise.
