My mare is gritty, ratey and has a rollback "style". She runs into the first barrel great, gets to the backside, about 3-4 feet, then rolls back too soon, almost on top of the barrel or barely leaves enough room to come out of it, leaving us with some tipped barrels. My thought is she needs to shorten her stride, allow a couple strides on the back side to give her room and come on around? Any thoughts? Or drills to help us? Many thanks!

I had a gelding that did this. What I found worked FOR HIM was I REALLY drove him up into the turn, and using my ENTIRE body I asked him to stay square and take that extra step around the barrel before allowing him to snap around. I made sure to keep my hips square, my hands even, my inside leg right at the cinch to keep his shoulder up, and my outside leg just a stitch behind the cinch in order to keep his hip up under him and maintain the "forward" cue. When I first started practicing this new "style" with him, I rode him two handed around the barrel, using my outside rein to stabilize him in case he wanted to get over bendy and/or snap back too soon.

I hope that makes sense.

That makes total sense! I am sure I am part of the problem; anticipating the turn and/or setting too soon. I had been riding her two handed all the way through the first, I guess I need to go back to that until it becomes second nature. Thanks for your response!

I would just visualize more of a rounded square shaped turn, rather than a circle or a teardrop or whatever shape you operate with. If I visualized a squared up turn, and rode him like I wanted corners - he was much easier to drive up into the turn and then finish it out properly.
