Is there such a thing as a weak joint capsule? No lameness but some swelling around the fetlock area.

Don't know about horses, but I had one in my thumb that burst in a riding accident. I was told to expect a year to pass before I could fully use my thumb again and that my right thumb will always be bigger than my left now.

To me this sounds like inflammation or early onset arthritis in the joint.

The capsule is just there to hold the fluid in the joint to allow lubrication and cushioning

Hubby's rope horse was diagnosed with a damaged joint capsule last year. He had minor swelling and was limping on and off. Vet xrayed it and said to give him 6 months off, and keep him alone so he wouldn't run with the other horses. Turned him out in the cow field and hubby counted the days down anxiously lol, he's his favorite.
6 months passed and he started slowly legging him back up amd he was fine. It's been over a year since he started riding him again and he hasn't shown any lameness at all.
