When selling a horse sight unseen, is it appropriate to ask for a reference from the buyer?

I am trying to sell a horse now with some breathing maintenance and a potential buyer wanted him from over 1,000 miles away. Seemed to be a few holes in the potential buyer's story so I requested a reference. Buyer was extremely angry over my request. I completely understand once he is sold-he is sold and I am okay with that. But I certainly want to place him appropriately as this horse is special to our family. I just want to be a respectful seller to all those people horse shopping.

It could have been a scam also-not sure.

I learned references mean nothing.

I have held items i had for sale, as they had good references, (good people I respect) then they dropped off the face of the earth.

I have learned if it doesn't feel right or too quick, it is too good to be true, go with your gut.

I ask for vet and farrier references. If they say no I don't sell. Most appreciate my concern for the welfare of the horse.

Bottom line, if you have disclosed in your advertising "to an approved home only", you are allowed to ask and qualify the buyers (depending on laws in your state, of course).  Otherwise, perhaps not in the court of law.

Best of luck, it's tough to sell one you care about, not knowing if the buyer will keep up the maintenance, etc.
