Long locks!

Curious to know what y'all do to keep those thin manes long and strong! My horses in the past have had nice thick manes so it was never a real concern. The filly I have now has a nice long mane, but it seems to be very thin and I'm afraid of it braking off. I never brush it without detangler/conditioner. Should I braid it or leave it down? She is out 24/7 and it can get a bit tangled on a windy day.

My mare has a long thinner mane. I keep it in braids and let it down once a week or once every two weeks depending on how much it comes undone. I don't keep it real tight but enough to not fall out and I don't make the bands tight so I also wrap them in small strips of vet wrap so it breaths
(just around the band
) and I NEVER EVER brush it. Even if it takes a whole thing of coconut oil or cowboy magic
(not show sheen that stuff is bad
) and an hour I comb it in small sections.

Also if you feed biotin it will make the hair stronger and less likely to break
(common misconception that it makes it grow when in fact it just makes the hair stronger and in turn it gets longer
) :

My mare had a long thin mane I cut it off late this summer to like 2 inches or so and its already probably 5 to 6 inches long again but it's way thicker. I used to always braid it but a ton broke off right now I am only braiding it when I run because my hands do get caught in it and then taking them out after. I use coconut oil to de tangle and I think changing her diet helped it as well. I also never ever brush it. I will finger comb to braid in big lose braids and that is it. I do try to keep it washed and conditioned but right now during the winter I don't even worry about it.
