My 4 year old was seen by the vet last week after discovering some pretty severe swelling on the hind interior leg and some minor lameness. The vet who examined found quite a bit of fluid build up and determined it was just the tendon sheath that was sprained. We are hoping for absolutely no tendon damage but there was quite a bit of fluid build up causing the ultrasound to be a bit fuzzy.

The tendon sheath was tapped and drained and injected with steroids--that was 3 days ago and I have seen quite a bit of reduction in swelling--she is to be on stall rest for a week.

Has anyone else had experience with this? What was your success rate? The vet seemed optimistic for full recovery but I am still concerned.

I don't have direct experience. But I think with any tendon injury allowing enough recovery time is crucial. Do not push them, once they are sound and ready, bring them back slow. Good luck and speedy recovery!

My guy just had one drained on his knee last week. Tendon sheath was extremely swollen, and from that, his tendon was also a tiny bit swollen. Drained, injected w/ steroids. Now he's on 2 week stall rest. I changed his bandages for the first time yesterday, knee looks much better already. Instead of a large "bubble" it's now a small knot. Not sure what your vet told you, but mine told me that because the sheath is so sensitive, the swelling may or may not return. Either way would be normal, and he will not be effected in the long run. Even if the swelling comes back, he will still be A ok to compete on. Hope this helps! I'm worried for my boy, but the vet doesn't seem to have any doubts he will be competing again =] BUT...since his tendon was involved, he will need the entire summer off, and to come back extremely slowly =/ Anything for our babies haha. Also, it's called a carpal hygroma when the tendon sheath is swollen, so that's what my boy had =] I googled a lot about it (never heard of it before) and it's usually nothing to worry about =] Good luck, keep us posted!
