I am looking for a bit to better suit my mare and I. I need desperately to work on trusting her and being quieter with my hands but until then I would like to put her in something more forgiving. Her and I have come a long way (she was a bit of a dragon due to BS care she was given) so I can* trust her now, its just hard.

She is a very automatic horse that requires some whoa at the back of the pen and some lift for the 2nd and 3rd. I sometimes have to check her at the first barrel. She is a very touchy mare and we are at this point almost turning behind the 2nd barrel and having to step out to go around it. I need something lighter on her while I work on me.

She is currently in a 2 piece goose tree double gag with a loose curb. I have the short shank but I still think its too much. I usually ride her at home/ warm her up in a hack (a hack I have never seen elsewhere before so I don't know what its called). It is not a bit I can run her in. It takes a much bigger bite than the goose tree but she needs it riding at home and warming up.

I considered the following: Lighter hack: Jim Warner short with rope nose or bozo (Peterson mentioned the Bozo being a forgiving hack), a goose tree simplicity (to give her a smoother pull than the double gag, or a tiny lift bit like a small JR Cowhorse (this is what her first owner rode her in with success but was before another owner tried their dangdest to ruin her)

For "touchy" horses, I like hackamores. Seems like they are happier if you stay out of their mouth. Personally, I've had good luck with the Little S Hack. I do use the rope noseband. It sometimes nice to have the "bite" just in case you need it, but you don't have to use it.

For her turning too soon on you on the 2nd barrel, use your legs and just support with the inside rein.

I would say the Jim Warner for the lift and you'd have whoa at the end.  The little S doesn't have as much whoa for me.

A combo bit might be good as well.  I like a Reinsman 903 Rope Nose Ring Combo.  The noseband gets their attention and then if you need the bit you have it, and chin strap can be adjusted for less or more.
We used this on an old pleasure mare-turned barrel horse who didn't need much help, but needed just enough here and there and it didn't get severe on her because she'd shut down into pleasure mode with something severe.

I second the combo bit! Have you tried something with a chain mouth piece? I found it very forgiving for my guy whenever I was getting use to his speed and power, and I was falling behind. This wasn't quite enough whoa for him at the end of the pen, but after some things coming to light, I think I can back him down to a smaller hack than what I'm running him in.
