Subject: Mare with old torn muscle ~ Help!

Recently, I bought a 10 year old mare that had been barrel raced and ranched on. She was sold to me as a broodmare as she was lame. She had a torn muscle in her hind end that has since healed and is not painful, but the muscle has lost some of its elasticity resulting in some limitation of the movement for the limb. I was wondering if there was something I could do to increase the range of motion again. She trots, canters, and gallops around the pasture just fine and the slight limp is only really prominint when shes walking. I was going to try to slowly work her and see if light work would increase or decrease her stiffness but was hoping someone might have had sucess with a suppliment or something. My wish is that she is able to be trail ridden when not being a momma.

Her at 2yo

Her earlier this year sporting a baby bump

A muscle relaxer from your vet might help reduce the stiffness and loosen her up a bit for you to do some light riding, but I'd check with you vet to make sure it wont hurt the baby. Have you tried putting liniment directly on the muscle to see if that helps, even if it's just temporary? She's beautiful! <3 I bet you get some pretty babies out of that one!

We have a 6 year old mare with an old torn hamstring injury. Sounds like what your mare has. Ours is rock hard and causes her to short step on that leg. Not lame, just the scar tissue doesn’t allow it to fully extend. I’ve had two different performance vets look at her & they really consider it a nonissue. We’ve started running her this year & she’s already clocking top of the 3D with just a handful of runs. I’m like you, I want to do something but they assured me it bothers me worse than her. I even inquired about having surgery done on it, but both vets were very against the idea.
