I'm running a 16 year old gelding. He runs better on Banimine but looking for something else to help him. What are some of the tried and true supplements everyone has tried. Thanks in advance ??

More information is needed.

Have you had him examined by a good performance vet, and had a lameness exam? Older horses are bound to have aches and pains that can be addressed, that will be up to you and your vet to decide.

In my opinion, I would never run a horse on banamine "just because". You need to have a REASON for why you are doing things.

Does your horse need hock injections?

Are they sore on their front feet?

Do they have generalized arthritis that could benefit from Adequan?

etc. etc. etc. etc.

In my experience, I have not had much success with "only supplements". Usually you need good quality medical care and vet-strength treatments to keep those older horses going good and going down the road.

I agree with the other poster in regards to just keeping a horse on NSAIDS. I ran a horse until he was 23 and still placing in the lower Ds regularly. I had a performance horse vet look at him at least quarterly. I kept him in shape even when we weren't running. That's not to say I didn't give him several weeks off with no riding at a time like in the heat of summer, but I did everything systematically and never let him get severly out of shape. I also transitioned one of our work out days to ground work with ground poles, backing, stretching, etc. This way he was still getting a workout but without me on his back. With our routine, he would only need injections maybe every 18 mo. and that was generally in a different joint than it had been. We rotated through stiffles, hocks and his front end but they would hold for this 18 mo+ schedule. I did keep him on monthy Adaquan injections and would give probiotics and flax seed oil as he was prone to leaky gut and was basically on a dry lot. If we did do a long weekend  of racing, which I didn't do very often, I would keep him on Equioxx a few days before and through the event, but he wasn't on any long term NSAIDS and I don't think I would have loved doing that due to the ulcer risk.

Performace vet, at 16 joints will need injected if they aren't already. Ditch the banamine, use Equioxx of you're going to give something to reduce soreness. But you need to treat the soreness with a vet, not cover it up with NSAIDS. I've had great luck with MVP Exceed 6 Way, my vet & I did our own study on my horses with it & how it changed the synovial fluid that was extracted before injecting the joints. One horse went from completely dry joints for years, to having normal viscosity fluid within 6 months of starting. I was able to prolong injections on him and another mare I have, so I have seen it work for myself. Every horse is going to be different though, but I would start with joint injections if you haven't already. If he runs better on a painkiller, something isn't right somewhere
