Southtxponygirl - 2014-03-13 10:30 PM Could you fly out to where this horse is and try it out? Just a thought
thought strongly about just that $600 roundtrip ticket...then Id have to get him home, how much does horse transport cost, anyway?

Going to cost a lot more than $600 dollars if the horse is not what they say it is.  I would buy a young horse sight unseen (as long as I had someone that could go look at it for me) but not a finished horse.  You need to know if you are a fit for this horse.  I don't care how big a win record he has with someone else.

I bought my good mare, sort of without trying her. I knew I liked her and would get along with her from talking to the owner and seeing dozens of videos. I paid the $25,000 before meeting her halfway. I paid for her to transport her to the halfway point, and I rode her there. (Rented a big indoor). I took an hour lesson on her, and loved her even more than I did when I left home! I loaded her on the trailer and left for home.

It can go both ways. I was very happy with the transaction. They would not let me buy her without riding her, and I was very thankful for that!

RocketPilot - 2014-03-14 8:13 PM I know of someone in Texas who bought a horse from Washington state or Oregon (cannot remember which) and paid 25K plus shipping.  The horse is/was 1D with lots of video, she was in love.  Now she will not ride the horse because he is nervous and a pain to just ride around.  I would either find something closer or fly out to ride.

Can I have her number?  LOL

It makes WAY more sense to try the horse first and I would suggest doing so...but having said that I have purchased a few horses without riding them.  One was a 2D horse, the other was a 1D horse.  Both horses were exactly as they were represented.

It takes me a while to get with a horse and I'm not comfortable getting on a strange horse and making a run.  I'm not talking a 4D run, I'm talking about riding a 1D rocket.  It takes me a while to trust a new horse (aka FAST horse) so even if I would have drove the 500+ miles to see said horse I wouldn't have made a "real" run on the horse.

Yes the smart thing is to see and ride horse first but I've done it before and if my gut trusts the seller I'd probably do it again.
