Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | mruggles - 2013-11-26 8:59 AM Fairweather - 2013-11-27 2:42 AM We pull with a gas engine - 3/4 ton heavy duty dually. We have less than $10k in it.
During show season we'll haul 2-3x a month usually no more than 2 hours away. I'll haul 3-4 in a 16' aluminum stock trailer. I also haul out a few times a month to the farrier and to practice.
The furtherst we've pulled was to Ft. Smith (10 hours) and we pulled a 1980's Steel living quarters with 4 big horses. It made the trip to Jackson this past weekend as well pulling that same trailer and load -- it averages around 7 miles per gallon pulling that trailer.
The reason we bought a gas engine is that it's a lot cheaper to work on. Unless you buy new, there's going to be things that will need to be worked on here and there and when you start working on diesals it gets very expensive very quick. Plus, it's easier for most people to work on a gas engine anyhow.
I honestly have never seen a 3/4 ton dually....I didnt know they made them..interestingM
I posted this morning at 4am before I was fully awake, apparently.
It is a 1 ton, not a 3/4 ton. The truck we had sold to buy this one was a 3/4 single axle heavy duty. I've seen heavy duty 3/4 ton dually trucks and yes, they're older models.
Here's a pic pulling to FT Smith -- you can see how heavy that trailer was. Didn't break any speed records but there sure isn't anybody pulling that sounds like it.

ChasingCans04 - 2013-11-26 8:28 AM I pull an aluminium 3H bp with a '13 F250 diesel and I'll never go back to gas. The only downside is fuel, since it is over $4.35 by me at the moment. But I'll that over my guzzling Silverado any day.
What kind of mpg's are you getting with the diesel? And how do you like the new motor thus far?
Love Love Love the new motor, I don't even feel the trailer when I haul. We used to pull with a '02 F250 diesel manual but it became "retired" as a hay/farm truck. While I love my manuals, it just didn't pull as well as the automatic does. For the new guy I average around 15-17 mpg empty and 11-12 mpg pulling 1 horse in the 3 horse. |

I don't know of anyone that would pay 10-20k for a 12v Cummins.
Alberta, is where you can expect to pay over 10k for 12 valve dodge.
And for the person who commented on oil changes Alberta you pay for everything, our diesel is 1.23 per litre which is over 4 per gallon

| The other things that are nice about the diesels (unless they have started making them in gas engines too) is the tow haul and engine brake options. We own a 2009 dodge diesel 1 ton and a 2012 GMC 1 ton duramax. They are both great pulling machines. I would not go back to gas. |

Location: Southeast Louisiana | Personally, I'll go gas 3/4 ton, but for a 1ton, diesel for me. Reason is mostly resale. Even the 3/4 ton gas burners are hard to sell. But I can find a better deal in a gas truck. I've had good luck hauling with a gas 3/4 ton. But, with the lower mileage, I have to stop for gas every 200-250 miles! That gets old really quick! But, it's just inconvenient. It's less convenient paying double the truck note right now.
To me, the low purchase price offsets the lower fuel mileage (dollar-wise). Not a big difference pulling a light trailer. Like someone else mentioned, it'll be a long time before the fuel cost catches up to the savings in purchase price. |

yep, that's why we have the gas as well. I don't pull enough to justify the additional cost of a diesel. |
