Subject: Building a house near family?

My husband and I are contemplating building a house on free land that my parents are giving us or buying a place of our own. Yes, I know that it sounds like a no brainer BUT the free land is on the same property as my parents and brother. We all run barrels and rope so my parents place is turn key (arena, barns, stalls, etc.) as far as the horse operation goes. My husband is gone with work a lot so it is nice to have extra help around with the horses and kids. We live on the property now in a mobile home but for some reason I'm having a hard time making the decision to build on the land. We get along pretty good with a squabble here and there. Anyone have similar experience? Do I just need to put on my big girl panties and suck it up or should I look in to our "own" place?

I am in almost an identical situation, except without the choice.

My husband and I currently live in the original farm house on his family's 3500 acre ranch, and then about a mile up from us (same property) his parents live in the house they built in the 70s. We plan to build our own house on the property in a bit better location (we are right on the county road).

I'm very thankful that we are blessed with such an amazing place to live and raise our family, BUT...

I'm the only one with horses, and I have to fight tooth and nail for EVERYTHING: fencing off ten acres to be THEIR pasture (why can't they just range with the cattle?), having my husband build me an arena (we have all the equipment, he just has to run it - but why can't you just run and school in the middle of the field?). The close proximity also allows for "just dropping in" - which I'm normally fine with; except at nap time, dinner time, when I'm in the shower, during quality husband time, etc.

We get along great with my in-laws, but SOOOOOOOMETIMES - I JUST WANT MY OWN FRIGGIN PROPERTY!!!!! WITH A VELOCIRAPTOR FENCE, AND ELECTRIC GATE, AND BIG MEAN DOGS TO KEEP PEOPLE OUT!!!!!

We lived across the road from my parents on the family farm for the first 7 years we were married. Everyone got along, but my husband is happier now that we bought our own land and built a couple of miles away.

I'm glad I'm not the only one dealing with this. You are making me feel better.

I totally would.  If you use their place now to ride and rope it won't be any different.  I would love to be able to live with my parents on the same property and be able to make a living in the same town.  Sounds weird but I miss them so much!  My dream home consists of them living on the property in a detached mother in law suite or in their own small home on some nice property.....
