I had my horses fecal tested for worms thorugh Horseman's Labs. Out of four only one came back positive and that was my mare with a strongyle egg count of 400. I panicked and orderd a 5-day Panacur Powerpac, which is now here, but I'm having second thoughts after hearing about some reactions to "large" worm loads and power pac strength/duration. Is 400 considered a heavy load? Anyone have a horse with a reaction to the worms dying? I lab said to worm her and retest in three weeks, but they didn't say what type of wormer. I've contacted them for clarification but haven't heard back yet.

RE: Panacur Powerpac
Panacur and Safe Guard are identically the same product made by the same company. They are the oldest horse wormers ever sold and only attack 3 types of round worms. .. Most of these worms are immune to the meds and is the reason they doubled the meds and went to a 5 day worming schedule because a normal dose was totally useless. ... I think it is a fabulous marketing gimmick and has made them tons of money ...
These wormers do not kill anything ... they drug the grown worms to turn loose of their blood sucking hold and pass out the rear end while still alive. .. This is the reason many worms are see in horse poop. When worms are killed by a wormer they disintegrate before passing and just turn the poop a darker brown/black...
Original power pack marketing instructions did the 5 day panacur and then 10 days later did a Quest worming and then 30 days later another worming with ivermectin ... in order to get a horse de wormed effectively ... I guess they got embarrassed and stopped recommending the final two wormers ...
If your horses have air bellies on them ... I use Equipos for round worm disposal and then a week later come in with ivermectin or Quest to really clean the worms out of them ... and the "hay" // air belly will disappear ... all three of these will kill the worms.
You can tell a real wormy horse by looking at their fresh poop .... no worms it will be a fresh yellow//bright//green and will start turning to darker browns and to black as worms get really bad. The color change is nothing but the blood and feces from the over load of worms ...
A good consistent effective worming and feeding program makes me proud to show buyers my horses when I decide to sell ...

Thanks for your input. My mare does not look poor in any way, to look at her you wouldn't think she was wormy at all.

That is not a heavy load. Worm your mare and follow-up in 2 weeks with Quest, then every 90 days Quest again.

I have to disagree with your information Barrelhorse USA. There are only 3 classes of dewormers and no actual science has been found that horses are fenbendazole resistant, in fact if you look at what research has been done, ivermectin if found to be the most resistant because of the overuse. Look at Texas A&M's latest study. Powerpacs at double the dose gets the encysted L3 and L4. When power packs first came out quest wasn't even on the market... Completely different class of drug. And it was never on the label to follow up with it. Perhaps a vet recommended it...
