Member Posts: 24	I just recently got a GORGEOUS Down Home Dash gelding in for training. And I mean GORGEOUS. Now I know those DHD horses have HUGE and HEAVY shoulders. They're more turney on their front end. Like driving a pickup with a plow on it... I'd rather take the Camaro for a spin lol. Just wondering who's out there with a little advice to share, drills and exercises to get them moving off their hind end, powering up, and lightened on the front. I could write a book on the drills I usually use... but just thought I'd see if anyone's got something new I can try! *And yeah, I know there's always exceptions to the rule, and there are DHD's out there that don't fit the 'heavy front-end' description. Location: KS	I had a DHD, he didn't necessarily have heavy shoulders but he was a bronc!! That sucker bucked me off more times than I care to admit. He finally kind of came out of it--as long as he got ridden 7 days a week. I spent 4 years on him and he was fast but I never could get him to turn the way I wanted. I always joked that he was oxygen deprived at birth because it didn't seem like he retained anything.

Peecans	I have no experience with DHD horses, ive had some front endy ones though lol. You need to get them really broke, and really understanding how to drive off this hind end and really get thier hocks under them. I use cattle to do most that kind of training, when they dump on thier front they lose the calf and make a whole lot of work for themselves. But I'm very lucky to have that. I audited a Always Duning clinic, and he has some great exersize for really getting them to work right. Maybe try utube as well as the dorrance brothers. The Dorrance brothers talk alot about timing. This is so important on a front endy horse,if you dont have things set to ask when thier hind end is in the pefrect position they will dump everything on the front. If you can underatand the timing and know where his him end is and have him nice and broke things will be great! I know you asked specifically for drills but i suck at explaining then and you will get a ton of good ones on here form these great ladies. I feel timing really helps so I wanted to share.
