I'm not an experienced seller, but I'm advertising a couple of weanling foals on the internet. My question is, if I sell one to somebody long distance, how is it best to arrange for payment, cashiers check, money gram, western union? I was thinking of offering them a chance to put a deposit of half down to hold the foal one month until it's weaned. Do most people send the buyer a written contract when this is done? Also, are the horse's registration and transfer paperwork normally sent with the horse transporter when they pick up the horse? I just need some advice on the standard practice and best way to do this. I haven't ever bought a horse that I didn't drive to, pay for, and pick up myself, so I haven't had experience with it either way.

Your idea of half down until the foal is ready to sell is a good one.  Yes, you should write up a contract so everyone is clear on their intentions.  The contract should include agreement date, the amount of funds down (designate if the funds are refundable or non-refundable), the scheduled date the foal will be shipped, and that final payment will be due prior to shipment and the funds must have cleared your bank (funds wired is best).  Also include in the contract how the registration papers will be delivered to the buyer (via the shipper or mailed separately).

The best method of payment is wire transfer.  Most title companies no longer accept cashier's checks due to the fraudulent activity involved with them, so a personal check may be better than a cashier's check.  Either way, the funds must be clear before the horse leaves your property.

I would also have something in writing about who is responsible if the foal gets hurt.  Who pays the vet bills and if they can get a refund if the foal does get hurt.

That's a good idea, there's always a chance of that happening.
