Posting for a close friend. I didn't want to steal the other thread but we did read through the whole thing. Her good horse came up just after Christmas with a swollen and watery eye. Took him straight to the vet clinic (where he has been ever since) They have tried all kinds of meds on him and nothing is working but the vet bill is getting pretty big and he is obviously still in a good bit of pain. Thinking it might be time to consider removing it.

So, for those of you who had the eye removed what kind of vet bill is she looking at and what can she expect for recovery time etc. Any info would be appreciated. She is trying to make the best decision for both her and the horse.

We had one removed many years ago (probably 10 years) because of Glaucoma. It cost around 1200.00. Recovery time was about 3 weeks and the horse adjusted just fine. That being said, we knew what we were dealing with and there was no chance of it getting better.

This is what is about to happen to her too. She is trying so hard to save his eye. I think he is seeing his second specialist this week and that does not count all the vets that have been involved in trying to treat him. They have already done two procedures on his eye in addition to all the meds and there hasn't been any improvement at all.

I had a horse get kicked and split the eye so it had to be removed. Total bill was around $800.
