I am considering a futurity career for my 2 yo. She has the height and bloodlines. She's in trading in now so I'll let her talent develop as it will. I've never looked into doing Futurities before. What are your long term concerns for the horses? What are some of the common traits in the successful horses? I'm on the fence and know I need to understand the world as much as possible if she develops the talents she needs. Thanks!

I'll start by saying that I've never done futurities, but hope to in the future. I would think one of the most important traits would be maturity, both mental and physical. I've had colts that there was no way mentally they could have done futurities. The 3 year old I hope to futurity acts like an old soul. Nothing really rattles her and she's physically a good size for her age. Good luck, I hope you get some responses!

You just put them in training and hope they rise to the occasion. Regardless you will come out with a quality horse, if you chose your trainer wisely.

My plan for my two year olds is to have them nice and broke and slow working the pattern, so in the fall and winter I can start loping the pattern and exhibitioning. Right now my 2 YO hauls to the races with my open horse, I ride her around the warm up area and in the arena during the drags. She's trotting a nice barrel pattern and has a very good handle. My sister's 2YO is at about the same point except he hasn't been taken to as many races.
