Member Posts: 33	Hey y'all I have had this gelding of mine for a few months and he has had windpuffs form right above his knee joints and around his back ankles. What are some steps I can take to treat these? Also will they effect his performance if not treated? Thank you

It would depend on what caused the wind puff...is it an acute onset caused by being stalled too much, standing on hard ground, riding too much on hard ground, long trailering periods, etc...OR is it from an old injury that is now resurfacing? Usually with an acute injury, the area will be soft when touched and you can feel heat. Either way I would consult a vet because you can do more harm than good. Horses with wind puffs require adequate turn out. I would cold hose several times a day and you can bandage, just be sure they don't get too tight.

Member Posts: 33	He is 6, we have been hauling to quite a few rodeos and jackpots but he's not in the trailer for an extensive amount of time. Most of the research I have found has told me they are mainly cosmetic and not a huge deal. Would ice leg boots help? Or Back on track boots? Thank you.

Elite Veteran Posts: 889	You are correct, most the time nothing to worry about. I would assume sketchy or deep ground could be the culprit. But if the windpuffs keep returning and changing in size/texture, it could lead to a more severe injury. I would say ice boots over BOT, just because you don't want to add heat to the area.

I Don't Brag Posts: 6960	They in themselves are not an issue. They are, however, an indication of a past strain. You might want to investigate they cause, but you are going to have to learn to live with them.
