Hauled out to go trail riding with friends yesterday. Me on my over weight paint, my kids on their horses(better shape then mine) and friends. It was hot yesterday. My guy was a sweaty mess. Almost to the end of the ride my kids take off out of sight having a grand time. I tried staying back to chat with friends. My paint was throwing a fit! Snorting and carrying on. Usual behavior for him when he is upset... Got back to the trailer and swapped bridle for halter and looked down to see blood on my arm. My paint was bleeding from his nose. Grabbed a paper towel and wiped it away. One more stream of blood and then it was done.
I have never seen or dealt with this before. So today as I'm trying to work... I am doing research on bleeders.

Any advise would be great!
Thanks

Could he have actually have had an EIPH episode? Yes - in theory anytime the blood pressure goes up they can bleed. A bleeder with a gate problem can bleed before they even get in the arena.

Could he just have burst a blood vessel and had a bloody nose? Also yes.

The only way you'll know for sure is to have a vet scope him, and the time window to do so based on this event is closing quickly.

Fat + Heat + elevated BP = perfect conditions for a EPIH situation .

conditioning is key to management.

if hes overweight and not in shape, that could have greatly contributed to it especially if he was ridden harder than he has been in a while. Theres also a possibility on the trail ride something like a branch went up his nose so, you never know.

Thank you everyone. I really appreciate the insight. I am leaning towards broken blood vessel. He was upset and snorting and blowing telling me all about it. I am assuming that was the cause of the bleeding. He didn't run into anything that would have caused it.
