Anyone have experience with this bloodline ?   Obviously other horses in the pedigree make a difference... any comments on characteristics of horses with On a High fairly close up...

One of the best horses I've ever owned. Smart quiet willing attitude in the one I had.

I ran a son of OAH when I started barrels about 9 years ago. He ran successfully on the track and then made a barrel horse. He was seasoned and had been hauled to everything well before I got him. He was my first barrel horse and I'd take a million more. He knew wayyyyy more than I did about running and babysat me. I came from the cutting world and that sucker slowed down and waited on me when I was behind. He clocked effortlessly and was so stinking solid. A drunk monkey could run him (and probably would have done better than I did back then). He won 1D money at jackpots with 100-200 runners, open rodeo money, etc all with me just hanging on for dear life.

He warmed up like a western pleasure horse. Head low, swinging stride. Calm and cool. Stood in the holding pen the same way. When you picked him up, he'd perk up and kind of sideways hop down the alley. When he was ready, he'd turn and go make you a hell of a nice run.

On the flip...he was GRUMPY. He didn't like to be messed with or touched. Get on, ride, get off, and leave him alone. He had a fondness for kicking, and put a dent in a friend of mine's thigh that she still has today (about 10-12 years later). He would warn you, at least. Lots of ear pinning. I only washed/brushed his tail when he was in a good mood :p

Even with the kicking and attitude...I'd take another just like him.

Thanks for the comments...I bought a  black mare who was a granddaughter of On a High....she had been trained as a barrel horse and was supposedly showing alot of speed and talent but had an injury and i bought her as a brood mare although she was sound to trail ride...she is watchy but pretty solid it seems...aloof but has finally warmed up in the last year.  I bred her to Slick by Design before he got so expensive and have a black stud colt out of her that seems like a real athlete... sometimes these traits carry on for several generations... was wondering what experience others had....

Dash For Cash and Easy Jet are the most prolific racing and barrel racing sires in the industry.  Any time you have a hiorse that goes back to either of these horses, you should have a nice barrel horse.  The problem arises when breeders decide to breed cow horses to race horses.  Look at the horses at the NFR.  All but one of the first satring horses go back to Dash For Cash and most of those are through First Down Dash.  Brittany Tonozzi's horse goes back to Streakin Six (Easy Jet).  She has had good success with her Streakin Six horses and if it ain't broke don't fix it.
