I've never noticed that horse people are particularly mean, there are mean people everywhere you go.  And everytime someone starts in on snobbery, I can't help but wonder if that's more an introverted personality because there are tons of that type who seem to connect really well with horses.   I have gotten to know quite a few on facebook and here who when you see them in person are much quieter than you would expect.

Or maybe where I live the people are abnormally nice.  Or maybe I'm too wrapped up in my own business to notice if someone says something ugly...or too deaf, since I can't hear **** in my left ear.
I do know that I haven't experienced very many mean people in real life, but the internet seems full of them.

I think it is because competition can bring out the worst in mankind.  Most people that show up for equine events are competitive.  That is why they are there in the first place.  There are all kinds of theories about why, as humans, we get mean at competitions.  I really believe the competitive spirit has a dark side.  Some people can keep it in check and others cant.  We (probably) all have had our share of dark side moments.  Even classifying people like "dressage people are all mean"  or "gaming people just dont know" is mean and we should avoid these stereotypes.

Why people talk about others:

1. The are JEALOUS
2. They have no self confidence so boost theirs by talking about others to make themselves feel better

People are mean because they are so jealous of either the fact that you are winning or successful or because you have more than they do. It makes them feel better about themselves to runyou down. Another reason that people are mean is that they are so absolutely miserable with their lives that they feel a need to make others as miserable as they are. The key here is to let remarks bounce off. I don't let anyone rain on my parade. Feel sorry for THEM and move on.

When watching a barrel race, or any other sports event, I make it a point to say something nice about everyone.  Even if someone has a bad run I can say, what a pretty horse, or I love her tack, or she is really making progress with that horse.  It makes me feel better to make others feel better.  No one knows what the other person is going through, or has accomplished.  No one has the right to critize unless asked for a critique by the person themselves.

It's not what you pull up in, it's what you unload.  A wise person told me this once.  I know someone who didn't have the best trailer and who didn't dress the part, but her horses were always top of the 1D.  She is well respected and a great person with a huge heart for helping other people.  I'm lucky to call her friend.

I have noticed that around here it's mainly the high school aged kids and their parents that are mean, and it's the ones that only do 4h and gaming shows. They talk crap about anyone who is good. And yet they never show up to a real barrel race where there's real competition.

I did 4h and high school equestrian team when I was younger and I don't miss it. I didn't have the fastest horse back then (like we are talking 5d if it had been a barrel race) but karma has came around. Everyone that was "sooo good" back then has never improved, because they still just go to gaming shows and they still know everything so they don't need to take lessons. But me, I got involved in strictly barrels right out of high school. Started taking lessons, going to clinics and joined this board. My mare that I have now is 1d/2d against some nice horses (including Paige) and could trip at the first barrel and still outrun everyone that was "so much better" than me in high school. Her worst run ever would still beat their fastest times by a full second.

Basically if people are mean and judgmental they will get what's coming eventually.

Because the horse community is a continuos revolving door. Sometimes its hard to tell how much someone really knows. If you are hearing these things, the horse community has been raised to be more "calloused" than the rest of the community. Don't worry it's a long way from the heart. And nobody gets punched in the face anymore. Lol

I've been wondering this myself lately. I got into showing obedience dogs about a year ago and I can honestly say that the people I have met in dog circles have been much more friendly and welcoming than many of the horse people I've met and competed against for the past decade. However, I have heard the opposite as well and people find "dog people" much cattier than "horse people"

Maybe life is just about finding your own type of crazy

Unfortunately, I think you can say that just about EVERY sport ....in the stands at basketball, baseball, football, etc, etc, etc you will hear people talking crapΒ .... and for heaven's sake don't go to a Little League or kids game.....

You are so correct! My son is the QB for his varsity team. I don't sit in reserve section, I don't go to booster meetings(I'm a member and volunteer) don't socialize with the other moms bc they are caddy beeeatches. Oh and the social media pages are filled with savages.

Here is my take on it, quit taking people at shows so serious most only want to know a winner at 50 I've been a loser then a winner back and forth many times the people who talk to me vary depending on my success most are shallow as people are in all walks of life in the workplace, church etc. parents siblings children and a few people are who I put my time into.I recently switched events and it's the same in it to. I personally thank southern people are the nicest the northerners are standoffish.
