DEVELOPING: Authorities said a fire has engulfed several apartment units following an explosion in Minneapolis Wednesday morning, injuring as many as 13 people.
Robert Ball of Hennepin County Emergency Medical Services said at least 13 people were injured and transported to area hospitals. He told KARE-TV that the victims have been taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from burns to trauma suffered from falling or jumping from windows.
He said all people thought to have been in the building at the time of the explosion have been accounted for, according to the station.
Plumes of thick, gray smoke could be seen rising from the building. Firefighters are on scene, but their efforts are being hampered by sub-zero temperatures.
Greg Nelson of the Minneapolis Emergency Communications Center said the building contains apartments, a grocery store and a mosque. He told the Minneapolis Star Tribune the fire was reported about 8:15 a.m. following an explosion.
The cause of the fire wasn't immediately known.
