Location: Smack Dab in the Middle | As I read through posts and think about all I have learned since becoming a regular reader here, I'm thinking about all the odd behaviors I saw from horses growing up, that I've since learned the possible root cause of, Like...
Headshaking while saddle=porbably ulcers. I had a mare as a kid that used to hold her foot up while she ate...she probably had ulcers.
Hopping in the hind end might mean stifle soreness. Etc, etc, etc.
So my idea here is to post little oddities, and see if someone has a suggestion as to what to look for. No long stories, just little odd behaviors.
For instance...horse that stands backed up by his water tub and raises a hind leg, almost like he's trying to put his foot in the tub? Any ideas? |

| Head shaking can also be teeth, or guttural pouch infection
Horse playing in water with lips submerging nostrils in water colic within a few days, my vet told me this one.
Horse yawning a lot, horse is colicing and it is really bad, vet told me this too, mine didn't make it.

| I totally know what you mean... I used to ride an ornery little gelding who kicked up at least a couple times I rode him, and had more "tricks" than any horse I've ever seen and knowing what I know now I feel so bad for him because Im sure it was probably something a lot deeper than him just being a jerk.
Your horse lifting his leg- is he acting like he wants to scratch it? My gelding will maneuver himself around so he can scratch the inside of his hocks on the fender of the trailer... turns our he LOVES to have the inside of his hind legs scratched- I dont think its anything to do with soundness, he's just itchy! |
