I would rule out pain first, then go back to the basics, and yes they can be fixed.
I would also reflect back and see what I was doing at the events leading up to the barrel, as a subtle cue from the rider can make the horse turn before.
You may even have to sacrifice an entry or two and slow down and run perfect.

Yes it can be fixed. AFTER taking the horse to a great lameness vet first and foremost, having them checked by an equine dentist, being absolutely positive your saddle fits, and seeking a chiro if needed. Then taking them through at shows a little slower, and allowing them to see its no longer painful, once any issues have been resolved.

In my experience if it is not a pain issue. Then you fix it with slow work and etc., it will come back at some point wether it is 5 years down the road or 6months. Good luck.

Tequila started ducking the first barrel and it was pain. I dealt with the pain,worked her slowly on the pattern. Now she does not duck the first anymore.
