Just bought a round of wormer for the horses and it got me to thinking; with all of the different brands, the feed threws, the pastes, the granules, the powders and what not, the different types of worms, etc; what do you all use and why? There are so many to choose from, many that treat the same thing obviously, but they vary in price from $3.99 up to $35.00 per dose. I want the best bang for my buck like anyone else, but most definitely want the best for my ponies.

I do fecal egg counts at the correct time of year to determine exactly what my horses need. Then I'm not "guessing" what type of medication they need.

With new research that is emerging that shows that some worms are becoming resistant to dewormers, I don't want to contribute to the resistance. Plus FEC's are pretty cheap in comparison to what you can dish out on dewormers that you are guessing your horse needs. JMO

We use Safeguard in the spring and sometimes a Pyrental (sp?) and in the fall a Ivermectin one. With ours in pasture we deworm twice a yr and if I am hauling anything a lot or leaving them in the corrals (which have sheep and cows in them on and off) they usually get a dose of Quest Plus just to make sure they are good and clean. When running fecals we rarely have many if any worms. I did take my husband's ranch gelding to a show last summer and he pooped at the trailer and it looked like it had spagetti in it . He and everything else with him in the corral got dewormed once we got home.

Yup, Italian food was out for awhile. I was poking at it with a stick, trying to figure out what the heck it was when a friend caught me in the act. So then she grabs a stick and we both get caught by another friend. None of us had ever seen anything like it. It was pretty gross. We looked like little boys poking sticks at poop (at least my nasty little boys do that).
