starting colts ~ bits!
okay.. so, ive got a really nice colt ive started.. but i dont know what to ride her in next, only thing thats in in her mouth was a smooth mouth o-ring. then that, with some draw reins. well, shes loping circles, stopping side passes etc but im about to start her on barrels and am not sure what to start her out in and then finish her with. she holds her head perfect, never shakes so i dont keep a tie down on her or annything she is VERY willing and i dont want to force this as she trys so hard anyways. please help with bits! will mostly likely order from L&W bits! what would yall do?!?!?!

I personally keep them in a snaffle while starting the pattern, I usually never feel the need to change bits. I also prefer a snaffle when training because I have a better "feel" for the horse. And if the horse is as broke as it sounds, I personally wouldn't change it.

I agree... stick with the snaffle until you need more. When my filly started picking up some speed
(i.e. snaffle was not enough
), I transitioned to the Martha Josey Start to Finish.

I agree, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Mine started running through the snaffle but shanked bits were too much, so I moved her to a "square" sliding gag with a twisted wire dogbone mouthpiece and I love it.. You have more leverage than a snaffle but less that a shanked bit. I ordered it from L&W with the rope headstall instead of cable.

okay, well I rode her today just the normal basic stuff and she acts like she doesn't want to pick up her shoulder, she moves over fine but doesn't pick her shoulder up. ??
