I am just starting out with racing barrels and have been doing research on different associations. I am wondering which association I could start out with to eventually make it to the NFR? I'm not exactly sure which association is directly linked to the NFR so my research is not going as smoothly as I had hoped. I am open to opinions, suggestions, and any information anyone can provide to try and help me advance.
Thank you,
Cari

The Women's Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) is the association directly linked to the NFR.

My advice, for what it's worth, is to start in a smaller association, like your local barrel races, advance to where you're able to win those, then join a little bit larger/tougher association and compete in it until you can win those, and so on.

I think someone just starting out would be quickly and easily discouraged if they just began running in WPRA rodeos. They are expensive and highly competitive. Think of it as someone who is swinging a bat for the first time trying to play in the World Series, or someone who has never caught a football before trying to play in the Superbowl. They can get there, but they don't just jump on a pro team and start playing, they have to progress through the ranks.

you need to be in contact with a good bank.

Thank you. I know all too well I would be in way over my head to start in a professional league, but knowing the information ahead of time will be helpful for when i do make it that far. I am planning on running in the backyard rodeos for a while before trying to advance.
Thank you,
Cari

Just start out in NBHA or IBRA until you get the feel of things. The girls that run at the NFR get there through the Women's Professional Rodeo Association. Before you can get there, you have to fill out your WPRA card.. after you run at some open shows for a while and get the hang of it you could hit some local rodeos and see if that would even be what you'd like to do.. it's a whole different atmosphere and they don't place divisions like open shows do.

I totally agree with you but when I said you need a fat wallet and a good vet skills someone told me that you don't need that. The person I recommended the fat wallet to had a horse that was cantering nicely around the barrels and I don't think anyone caught that but me. So perhaps a horse that is beating everyone in every 1D race is kind of important too.
