So I have taken it really slow with my 3yo. Had her since yearling and she has been through moving 4 times and a divorce with me so needless to say I haven't really had the time to devote. Like a week or two here and there of consistency. Well now that I am much more settled she gets rode 3-4 times a week. She is broke broke very light all over and calm as can be. She will look around at new places but when you ask her to move her feet she's all business. Well about 2 weeks ago I started askin her to rate and turn
(not big circles but turn
) with my seat and body. Well last Saturday I loped the barrels for the first time. She picks up her leads on cue pretty well so we loped to and half way around the 1st and when she realized I was sitting her she kind of petered out which worked out because I was able to ask for the left lead coming out of the barrow an she picked it right up, went across the pen and broke to a trot when I sat and picked up the wrong lead to the 3rd but switched when she get there and turned while loping lol. Big success I think!
Today :
) a friend of mine wanted me to go with her to a local arena so I warmed the baby up and loped down the side of the pen and ask her to go to the first. She gets to her spot I sit and she starts turning on her own. I was so happy! She breaks to a trot for a strid and picks up the left lead almost on her own. She was a little lost at the 2nd but listened to me so we held it together. Held the left lead all the way to and around the 3rd. Small victories man. She is sooo smart.
I know to some of you guys that's almost shameful for your 3yos but this filly has trotted the pattern about 10 times total. There is something to be said about a horse that is broke BEFORE the barrels! Lol

Congrats on the VICTORY!
"There is something to be said about a horse that is broke BEFORE the barrels!"
Too true, we bought a horse that was "patterned" but didnt know the basics, 6 months of basics and slow barrel work and were now on the right path.

WOOHOO!!! awesome.
It's the little things that keep us going in the whole training deal. My 3 yo filly is really starting to get her collection and use her rear more. I call it a win too! *HIGH FIVES*

I wasn't going to bump this back up to waste peoples time but since it was just bumped I wanted to thank everyone. This will be my 2nd baby to train from yearling all the way up. I plan on keeping her. We really really get along.
I want to thank everyone on BHW that has helped me with all of my riding/ horsemanship critiques and questions no matter if I liked it at the time or not LOL. The plentiful information and pinions really had a huge impact on my riding and training and I feel this colt will be much better than the last
(don't tell the first one- she's not used to not being the best in my barn LOL
) and I feel like that is because I have had so much help and have learned so much since then.
So thanks everyone for the facts and opinions and you guys are always welcome to tell me anything you feel like telling weather I'll like it or not because there is always something to learn and thank you thank you thank you for the kind words and encouragement. When your broke from spending your piggy bank trying to fix this one or that one and the other one isn't cooperating or you can't seem to get past this issue or that and your horse crap seems to be coming apart at the seams its nice to come here and read something positive.
