| Do any of you sell your horses at auction? Is there anyway you can make sure they dont go to a kill buyer?

Location: South Georgia | Enter the horse in a respected and reputable sale and set a reserve that would keep it out of the kill buyer's budget.

| I have a horse that I've considered sending to auction, but I'm too afraid of who may end up with him. He's well broke, but has horrible conformation and isn't trained for anything specific. He'd be a good trail horse, but he really needs someone that he respects. If you don't earn his respect, he is extremely dangerous - like will try to kill you. For me though he's a dream, I just don't have any use for him. |

This might sound harsh, but if I didn't want to keep him.... I would have him put down.
There's no telling what kind of hands a horse like this will wind up in.

Even if you sell a horse privately, there's not guarantee the new owner won't drop him off at the auction .... and he goes for kill.
The only 2 sure ways to make sure your horse doesn't end up with a kill buyer (if it is that important to you):
1) Keep the horse forever
2) Put the horse down
Once the horse leaves your hands, you have no control.

Not harsh at all, I have considered that. I'm not in a position where I need to sell or downsize, so for now he is staying with me. If I ever get to that point, I honestly will probably put him down instead of selling or taking him to an auction. |
