ok guys I just want to hear the input of those with more knowledge than myself. When do you like to use either one. Is it more based on personal preference or your horse. Or both. I have a hopeless bit addiction and wanted some input.

For me a fixed shank gives more control, because the bit applies pressure immediatley. I personally don't like a lot of gag. If I were riding a finished horse that ran best in a bit with a lot of gag I woukdn't be opposed to that though.

I like a gag on a horse who isn't so finished in the bridle, the sliding action of the gag works alot like a martingale would for a correct head set. Once they are soft in the gag I'd move them to the fixed bit- but this doesn't happen quickly!

I like a fixed mouth on a horse that needs more whoa or isn't super soft-mouthed.

I find a gag is more forgiving and has less control than a fixed shank bit.

I had the opportunity to speak with dutton and we spoke about this
He says draw gags are a good tool to keep horses driving with the hind end, he suggests this bit for horses starting to dump on the front end.
There is a lot more to a bit then gag versus fixed as the purchase to shank ratio is important,
(more purchase more poll control
) the bend of the shank
(more bend the quicker response and quicker release of the bit
)
Also the mouthpiece is crucial on how a bit works and how a horse responds. You may have the right bit but the wrong mouthpiece
As for gags I find a gag gives more bend, a fixed purchase can stiffen a horse up.
I suggest speaking to a bit maker about your horse the problems you are having and have them explain why they think a certain bit will work
