Best grass for texas horse pasture
We are getting ready to buy some grass seed to lay out on our property and I am curious as to what some of the Texas friends recommend? We live in West Texas where it's pretty dry most of the time. Our horses are rotated between 4 acres. Thanks for any help!

I would call your local feed/grain store and see what they suggested. You may also want to take a dirt sample to your local ag extension office and get it tested for nutrients and see what they suggest you plant. We had planned on bermuda fields here in N.Texas but our dirt wouldn't have had enough nutrients to grow it. It would've just died. They suggested a different type of grass but I can't remember what it was. Anyway, IT GREW! We got two cuts off our back pasture for hay for the cattle this winter and it has saved us a lot of money.
You don't want to fertilize it if you are going to have horses immedietly on it as some chemicals are fatal to horses. So I would get your soil tested first to see what you can grow naturally without much fertilization.

Contact the local NRCS office. This is literally what they do everyday - help people conserve, grow, and utilize grass and water resources! Hit 'em up, ask questions, and you'll get good help!

In Texas we have agricultural extension agents. They can recommend types of grass and amounts of fertilizer for your needs and area.

Thank you all! I will give them a call. We just moved here a year and a half ago and recently bought property. Unfortunately it was covered in mesquite trees so now that they are cleared we can try and figure out what to grow. Appreciate the help!
