Location: where the wind blows | Hi, What are the drivers license requirements for pulling a living quarters horse trailer in the U.S. states.
In Canada I can use my class 5 (regular drivers license) with registered farm plates on my truck no weight restrictions. But I know there is weight restrictions on towing without farm plates and a regular license. Hope my question makes sense.
Basically do I need a higher class license like a 1 to pull in the U.S.. I've also heard some states you need a log book. Is that true.
Thanks any advice appreciated. |

There's always a ton of confusion over all of it. I said screw it when I kept getting confused and studied the material and took my test. |

Location: In my own world | If you are NOT hauling for hire then you don't need a CDL. I can haul my OWN grain in a semi and hopper bottom from CA to NY with NO CDL, as long as it's my grain and I don't haul anyone else's. My husband hauled for hire for 10 years and then went to strictly hauling our own grain. No log book needed if you aren't for hire |

I always wondered why some semi rigs at shows said "Not for Hire" on the side. It all makes sense now! |

I live in Alberta and with farm plates you do have weight restrictions, all depends on what weight you register your truck for. |

Location: Woodstown, NJ | I never heard of anyone in America needing a different kind of driver's license to pull a horse trailer with living quarters. The rules for farm plates though, vary by state. Here in Jersey, you can only drive, I think, 30 miles from your farm when you have farm plates. The idea is you pay a lower registration fee because you are farming and they expect you to go from farm to farm or farm to market, not to a barrel race three hours away. I don't know how that would work coming here from another country with farm plates on your trailer..... This motor vehicle stuff is always confusing. |
