I'm looking for a 'new-to-me' saddle, and I'd like to try a Bob Marshall. I've heard there were a few that weren't good; I *think* I read a different company was making them for a few years. I also read something about bend in the seat or the seat folding. What should I be looking for and avoiding? Thanks!!!

You should make sure to ask if the seats ever been folded. I wouldn't buy one that even appears to have been folded in half at one point.

Also, make sure you're getting an original... not a Circle Y.

There are different styles, Jackie use to ride in the trail pommel and cantle which is an inch lower and I believe she's done the same with her circle y model. Tammy rides in the regular barrel, now circle y. I don't like the regular barrel. I felt too stuck, but love jackie's style. I custom ordered a 13.5" BM trail about 8-9 years ago. I still ride it and it's in great shape even though it has had thousands of hours in it. The fold in the seat would not scare me. When I ride a more sway backed horse mine will get a fold, but as soon as I toss it on the saddle rack it straightens out. It's just very well loved. My horses visit the chiro regularly and I don't have any back issues from them, though I use a saddle rite pad and rode english growing up, so I don't pound on the back. I found the trail model fits round backed horses better than the barrel. I actually had the pommel on a barrel BM make a horse cinchy and the trail pommel didn't do that to her.

I'd love to try one of the trail pommel BM's but never have been able to find one in my size.  I have a regular BM that I love on the right horse.  My mom bought a Tammy and I didn't get to ride it enough to pass judgement, but it seemed like the fenders bothered me the few times I did.

I don't ride a BM on everythign but do keep one around for those horses that it's just "right" on.
