| I am new to breeding and having a stud.. but, have been around horses for long enough, even then, LOTS to learn.
question: I have two mares here right now, live cover. Both are super easy to cover, just stand there, covered over 5 days in June until they were not showing heat and didnt react to him.
July, I think I missed one heat cycle of my mare... not a huge deal, either that, or she didnt come into heat, so hopefully caught. The other mare, is a fluzzy.. and came back into heat and lets him cover, first time tonight., not nearly as accepting as the first time, but still accepting.. so, I am assuming she didnt catch. 14 year maiden mare.
my question..can a mare come into heat that hard and still caught? She stays in heat a long time, and pretty much waddles around other horses when in. or moved somewhere...

| They will not come in heat if bred. It is rather late in the year to be breeding. I breed for futurity horses and those born really late in the year are 6 months behind in growth and maturity. If you want your babies to prove your stallion they need to be entering futurities their 4 year old year. Look at Firewaterontherocks babies. They are pretty darn hard to beat in any futurity. They have made him a household name. If you have other plans for your babies don't worry about it.
The stallion owners that I have dealt with do not breed after the third or fourth week in June. That is when I have been à paying customer.

Not true, I have had two mares that cycle like clockwork every month, and both ended up foaling a healthy baby.
Both I didn't even suspect pregnant, a neighbours stud got into our place on two different occasions. Never had either ultrasounded as they cycled the month after, and the month after that.
To the op best thing to do is to ultrasound, if they are not catching, it could be a reproductive issue, an infection, or twins causing a miscarriage

Location: Washington. (The DRY side.) | As was said, mares CAN still show VERY strong heat when in foal. "Generally", if they don't show back in heat they are in factin foal. But NOT ALWAYS! I've had mares that ran to the stallion squatting and peeing all over themselves literaly DAYS before they foaled!

I have a call into the vet to see what he is going to charge to ultrasound the two mares. I want to live cover my stud as little as possible right now.
And, I just counted the days since the last mare was covered, it has only been 13 days and she is showing heat and letting him cover. She also stays in for a good 5-7 days. I found that different.
As for the late breeding. Both of them will be going to competition homes, but not futurity homes. One of the mares is mine, and to have a mare foal out any earlier than May we still have snow, and no barn. The owner of the other mare doesn't futurity either. But, in saying that, yes, I would prefer if they both caught when they were last bred in June! And keep that the latest as July is pushing it.

Common Sense and then some
Location: So. California | Don't forget to have your stud 5 panel tested. It will be required to register the AQHA foals in 2016.
