I need to fertilize my pasture. I have one horse on it. We've had monsoon rains here, but this week is supposed to be dry all week, with a high of 73 by Friday. I'd like to fertilize maybe Sunday, since the rain is supposed to come back soon after. Do I need to keep my horse off the pasture? And for how long?

I don't know if they still have this? But it used to be, your local County Extension Office would test soil samples you brought in and recommend how to bring it into aliment for what you wanted to grow.

I've never removed ours -been doing it for years with horses in the pasture. Triple 16 would be very weak on nitrogen for this country. JT

Triple 16 is fine ... but once you buy the base fertilizer it costs very little to increase
the power of the mix to something like triple 21 or triple 25 ...
You get more bang for your dollar
or you can save money by distributing 150 lbs/acre
of triple 25 vs 200 lbs /acre of Triple 16 .. and cover more acres

We all look to spread fertilizer right before a rain and if it is a cloud burst it
gets washed away or if perfect shower fertilizer soaks into the ground i ...

Then there is the wet ground fertilizing if ground is solid enough to spread right
after it rains ... the wet ground will melt the fertilizer and pull it into the ground..
within a couple of hours ..

Shower missed me after spreading fertilizer ... fertilizer lays on top of dry ground
and especially the nitrogen 50%+ will evaporate into the air ... within 24 hours ..

Most of us do not pull horses or livestock off even if shower misses us ... if you
are doing a small acreage that is heavily grazed pull them off for 24 hours ...
not that they will eat too much ... fumes can make eyes and nose water and
worst case lips, gums or tongue sore ...

Areas where your horses graze the grass to ground level .... give these areas a
double run over to stimulate more growth ...

GOOD LUCK ON THE RAIN!!

If you are spraying liquid fertilizer ... a rain or 24 hours off is a good rule to
follow ....

Yes, the extension service still does soil testing. It's free and will tell you what you actually need.

The only thing, as I was asking my dad about this this morning, is triple 16 can burn if not applied correctly, or if using liquid, is mixed incorrectly. I have 1 horse, and she is going to be at the vet for about a week getting bred, and I'm going to try to get it all done (fertilizer and weed killer/2-4, D) that week so that it will have time to soak in before she comes back. So personally I'm going to try to find some liquid fertilizer that may be less likely to burn, but may resort to triple 16 as we have very good luck with it on our lawns.
ETA: I know you aren't in Montana, but I just found out our extension service no longer provides soil testing.
