Location: Willows, CA | Renew Gold will work fine with grass hay if the quality is good and the horses teeth are up to date. Grass hays go through the hind gut pretty fast. The reason that we recommend that some alfalfa be fed with it is not for additional energy, but to slow the transit time through the hind gut so that the pre biotic in Renew Gold has a better chance of supporting the beneficial bacteria that can then break down of the grass hay while it is there. This is also the reason that we tell horse owners to be sure that you horse can chew as comfortably as they can. If they are sore in the mouth they chew less. Since the grass hay diets are faster through the hind gut, it is important that the grass hay be broken up from complete chewing to aid in digestion. A sore mouthed horse will just chew enough to swallow and that can lead to poor digestion of grass hay diets. By recommending some alfalfa be added we are not telling people to switch to that from their good grass hay. Two or three pounds morning and night is all that is needed to support better digestion. |

Location: N Texas | When I first started feeding Renew Gold, they got just that with free choice high-quality hay. I only added alfalfa pellets because my senior horse needs to be fed twice a day, so the others get the alfalfa pellets in the morning so they're not "left out". They get 1 lb of alfalfa pellets in the morning, and about 3/4 lb of Renew Gold in the evening. They also get to graze in the front pasture for a few hours when the grass is growing good.
To answer your question, mine were doing great when they were just on Renew Gold and hay. |

| Thanks guys ! Honestly I feed pretty good grass hay & I do add 1 - 2 lbs of alfalfa pellets to their feed now . They are currently in purina senior , & that mix . I'm wanting to try the renew gold.. I'm just so afraid they won't maintain body condition on that small of an amount! |

Location: the end of the rainbow | I ha e been messing around with one mare and she is currently on only grass and renew gold for the last 3 weeks. Vet seems to think it is the alfalfa that is causing her cough and now that it has been eliminated from her diet & she has stopped coughing I agree. I was considering adding some beet pulp or something but since I haven't chatted with Win about it I haven't added anything else yet. |

You could add some beet pulp to effect transit time a little in the hind gut. It does not take a lot. If her teeth are good to go, and the grass hay quality is high, you might just be fine by keeping the grass hay in front of her and not adding anything. Call me if I can help.
