OK need suggestions on horse with no brakes leaving the run? Once I leave the 3rd and head out its all I can do to get him stopped and sometimes that questionable. All other times during slow work and rating for turn I sit and lift and he will plant but hit the ally way exiting and its no brakes. Had him checked and is sound, teeth are done regular. I have been riding in combination with nose band? He responds when slow working with rutledge but don't want to run in it? Suggestions?

I would bit him up even more...the bit is only as harsh as your hands. Can you stay off his face and let him work during a run, then use it to stop in the alley? Slowly you can use less and less until he starts using his brain to stop after the run when he knows the bit is coming =]

Agree with that too. I run one in a combo and can't wait to get him out of it. Luckily he has good brakes but I find after a while they seem to dull to it and lean back on it.

Set up a back to back barrel pattern at home so that when he comes off of third, he's headed towards a first barrel again. They figure out pretty fast it's a no win situation for them. After about 3 to 5 times I bet as soon as you sit down and say Whoa, he'll be MORE than happy to stop where you want him to. I believe in thinking outside of the box and being smarter than the thing you are dealing with. If you keep going up in bits and headgear to fix problems, eventually you run out of a big enough bit. At that point it's usually too big of a mess (especially mentally) to fix. Fix problems at home is my motto.
