any ideas for a bit to help with collection and giving at poll? this is only an issue at first barrel, horse is very broke, soft and breaks at poll, won't rate first and roots nose on backside. checked all usual suspects nothing physically wrong, just looking for something to really get attention while doing drills.

You'll probably think I'm crazy, but I use a bosal. I just hang mine on a regular headstall and rig it up with split leather reins. It's so easy to get them giving their nose and flexing at the poll. ETA: Especially with one that's already broke!

If your horse roots their nose on the backside of the first barrel, then I would beg to differ that your horse is "very soft" or "very broke". There's no such thing as being one-sided when it comes to being broke and soft.

I don't think you have a bit problem. I'd work on re-training this horse's problem side. (Provided there is not a physical reason for the horse to be stiff or uncooperative on that side.)

she didn't do it when we got her, our mistake was running too free at first barrel, miscues, i believe its rider driven, but has become a bit of a habit, so that is why i wanting to help with slow work to encourage her to collect. she is very broke, trained by an experienced barrel racer well known for her horses handles, this is rider error leading to bad form. working on riding issues along with wanting to work on rate issues.

Bits do not create collection. A soft supple horse along with building a topline creates collection.
