Location: Aggieland | My mare was recently diagnosed with Asthma/ IAD, we are currently soaking hay, keeping her turned out 24/7 and she just got off a round of steroids. What are some things y'all do to maintain your IAD horses? There are so many products out there its a little overwhelming! |

Location: Lost in the swamps | My horse was diagnosed 2 years ago with the same. A lot of people have had success with curost. I have not tried them because of expense. So I can't not comment. I did ALOT of research Because I wanted to get my horse off all the expensive and potentially dangerous meds (clembuterol and dex). he has summer grass/mold allergies. I normally have had to stall him 24/7 from May till October which I hate :(.
So I looked into equiresp and for me has been a god send! he only had two mucus spouts all summer last year so far he has been able to stay out!!! No coughing!! Equiresp got the crud out and keeps it out! I started out doing just the equisilver I did as per protocol and treated 3 x a week. So far I haven't had to do nearly as much this year!! |

| If soaking hay doesn't help you can make a home made hay steamer out of tote box and an earlaxx steam generater to sterilize the mold or fungal spores in his hay. But first, do you know for sure what the trigger is? Is it hay? Most times then not it is hay. I had a horse I tried everything on. Watering hay, steaming hay... ect. None of those management options worked. It was to the point to do I either decide not to run him anymore, even at that, let him suffer by continuing eating hay or do I just pull him off of hay for the rest of his life? he is only 8... Well I do not feed him hay anymore. It is the only way I can manage it otherwise he'd have to be on dex and would not have a career in the barrel pen. Hes doing great. I feed chaffhaye and soaked alfalfa cubes. I've tried every supplement out there.. curost ect. Nothing helped in his situation. To be honest it was all a waste of money. The main thing with an allergy is you have to take the allergen away on order for the reaction to stop and to keep permenant damage to the lungs from forming. If that happens he would then classify as a heave horse not IAD anymore. I say this all the time to people with IAD or heave horses.... it is no different then us being allergic to nuts or bees. We certianly wouldn't eat nuts or go by bees...

Location: NE Texas | For IAD, i'd recommend the Cur-Ost EQ Plus combined with the EQ Immune & Repair together for at least 90 days. However if the cough is productive, meaning they are coughing up mucous, go with the EQ Total Support instead of the EQ Plus and still use the EQ Immune & Repair. This combined with a clean whole grain diet (no processed feeds) and high quality forage has worked great for my horse and many others when many other tradtional and even prescribed medications had failed.

Location: Aggieland | Thanks for all the suggestions, an equi-resp is already on my list! Right now my vet says its exercise induced but I will be getting her allergy tested just to make sure. What supplement do you find that help as well. (Im already looking into CurOst but would like more ideas). And what do you do pre performance to make them as comfortable as possible?

Location: Oklahoma | Check into Forefront resp. It is natural and I have tried several different things and to be honest I love and had the best results with Curost, but cannot afford! Forefront is $58 for bout 58 days, and works on my horse just as good as curost! I was shocked. He did really well on one scoop a day but I am giving 2 bc of the humidity so the cost is $58.00 fir 30 days but it still cheaper than curost and for my horse works just as well! I am praying that my hubby lets me be a dealer! Ive never wanted to be a dealer for anything before bc I am no sales person and there is so many stuff out there. This product works and the price is affordable! This product was recommended to me from a lady that does all natural feed and essential oils. Good luck! |
