Just had a visit to the vet to see what is causing some issues with my mare. So far we know that she needed hocks injected, teeth done, treated for ulcers.

This is my dilemma. She passes a flex test with flying colors. However, when I tighten the cinch (SLOWLY), and walk off to grab a bridle, sometimes she will set back. She also acts like she's in pain, sore when I go to get on (if the cinch is snug).

She is sore in her withers, shoulders, and on her sides where the conch lays. However she's not sore under her belly and has been treated for ulcers. Additionally she's sore over her ribs on the right side toward the rear part of her ribs. Not sure if she's every fallen on her side, or what happened.

Now I just want to know if anyone has experienced this and what I should do to make her more comfortable. Chiro? Treat for ulcers again?

I would definitely have a chiro look at her and then maybe a massage therapist.

I have a mare that had the same symptoms. Had her gone over, chiro adjusted her, could find no reason for her to act the way she did, i.e. setting back, cinchy, etc...My chiro said it might be muscle memory. As in, it's hurt for a while and even though she doesn't hurt now physically, she THINKS it will. So, I started saddling from the opposite side. I do not have her tied when I tighten the cinch...I tighten in small intervals before getting on. So I basically changed the routine and it didn't cure her, but she's much more relaxed and agreeable.

Not ruling out yours may be hurt somewhere...but just some easy ideas to try.

Not sure where you are located, but if nothing else, chiro and massage therapy.

Horse sounds like a candidate for Kit and Kelly from Animal Krackers Body Balancing.

Also, have a knowledgable practioner check your saddle fit as well.

She might still be expecting the pain if shes had the ulcers long enough. Even if they are gone she may THINK its still going to hurt so shes bracing herself. I would have a chiro take a good look over her again and get her a massage. I love the benefits of a massage for them. If she's still in pain i would suggest getting x-rays of her withers. She could have an issue going on there as well. I would definitley get you saddle fitted too, it could be pinching and causing all this.

PSSM possibly? Making her body sore? Would be something to look into.
