I use adequan once a month, previcox daily, and injections when needed. I'm using the pelleted version of Actiflex, but I'm wondering if I really need it as I'm doing those other three things. He is 15.

If he is running and feeling well, then I would think you are good with what you are doing, I wouldn't keep adding more. There is definitely a saturation point with certain vitamins, minerals, supplements, etc. where the body just starts peeing it out and it's money down the drain. Sometimes less is more.

Thank you! My question is if I should take him off of the Actiflex as I'm doing other things? I'm worried about ulcers using the Actiflex and Previcox together. I'm not looking to add any more supplements, I'm just wondering if I could take him off the Actiflex..

I would speak to your vet about that. I know a lot of people are quick to do things without consulting their vets, but if your vet knows your horse well enough (which it sounds like you have a good relationship with them due to the great care you are giving your horse), then they would be more equipped to tell you if they felt your horse would perform just as well without the Actiflex.

They might just say "try it and see!", but IMO, I would want to know their opinion first, because if they feel your guy needs the extra benefits, then that would be good to know before stopping and starting again.

She said that she doesn't believe using Actiflex and Previcox together would cause ulcers. I'm not doubting what she says by any means, I just don't want to over supplement. She is not a fan of feed through joint supplements. She really only likes Cosequin.

You could always do a two week or month trial without the Actiflex, see how your guy does, and decide from there. I'm not sure how much Actiflex you're giving him, but I would think with the Previcox, joint injections and IM Adequan, that he would be just fine without it.

On a side note, I had a friend in college that fed two scoops of a certain feed before every rodeo because of a family tradition; not that it really worked miracles for her and the horse, but it made her feel better and gave her confidence knowing she was doing something extra to keep her horse happy and healthy.

So I guess it comes down to personal preference and what you're comfortable with doing and spending.
