So I’m saddle hunting. I did the bailing wire test and fit it to his withers, traced it onto card board and cut it out. He has a normal width for gullet
(6 & 3/4-7
) but if FLAT as a table top. Apparently both of my saddles are SQHB and he needs almost more than a full. Did I mention that he’s 3?!
I’m thinking about taking my cut out to the city and putting it against as many saddles as I can find lol. I think I’m about to run out of “cheap” options. I WAS trying to not spend more than $1000 on a used saddle but I’m starting to think that’s not going to be an option :/

Try a billy cook genuine from sulphur Oklahoma
1901
(this is on a buster welsh tree
)
2030
(this is on a Lynn mackenzie tree and the widest of the billy cooks
)

I have a similar situation going on. I spoke to a lot of makers and 3 kept being brought up by saddle makers and friends.
1. Marlene McRae Special Effx
2. Charymayne James Cactus
3. Lisa Lockhart by Circle Y
I just bought a Marlene as that is the only saddle I have ridden in and found a decent deal. I will keep you posted. I was hoping to find a CJ but I basically said whatever I found first I was going to buy and then sell if it doesn't workout. I heard from a LOT of people the CJ fits a broader backed horse.

yes, please let me know. I have decided to try a martin saddle with the axis tree. My geldings withers are only about 7" but his back is super wide/flat so I'm going for the behind the shoulder, fit the back type of saddle fit like what Sherry uses on Stingray.

So far - one ride in my Marlene. It seems a bit wide in the front which I knew was possible. But since she is downhill, I am wanting to shim up her anyway which I haven't done yet. The bars seem to fit her flat back best based on my experience. I have pics but likely can get them to upload LOL.

When I got my mare, she was narrow. I also have a Circle Y Marlene Special EFFX and it was too wide in the front when I got her. I started with a 3/4" pad and a Classic Equine shim, then I moved to just the 3/4 pad, then I had to go down to 1/2" pad. Now, I'm searching for a new saddle. Backs change. Ugh.
