When I was growing up my dad always bedded his horse stalls in sand. We lived close to the Red River and he would have it hauled in. My favorite thing in the world was when we’d get a new load, lol. He only fed alfalfa hay (and oats) and I can’t recall ever having a case of sand colic. We used a scoop shovel instead of a pick to clean stalls.

we have sand in our stalls, not by choice, but because we live in the high desert. i put stall mats over the top with shavings if needed. the mats need to be adjusted occasionally. i try to feed off the ground as much as possible, using large feed tubs and hay nets.

The one time I got in a bind with sand, the stalls weren’t big enough and didn’t have good enough drainage. They got nasty in a hurry, I couldn’t keep up with the pee and moisture.

I ended up building floors out of treated lumber and putting mats and shavings over top. In a second set of stalls, I put 2X12s over railroad ties laid at 4’ intervals. Then mats, then shavings. Works great.
