Location: Gainesville, TX | Most broodie leases are self care. You lease the mare and take her home with you and pay all her care and then pay a fee for the whole year. That fee can vary a lot depending on the mare. Some lease options, the breeder keeps the mare and you pay them a monthly board fee and a lease fee. But then you know the mare and baby are left with someone who has a lot of experience, etc. |

oija, doubtlessly, thanks a lot for your very informative answer, however i think OP was looking for a more detailed answer. or at least that's what it seems and that's what i personally am searching for. would appreciate a more detailed answer if possible

Location: North Dakota | I just went through leasing out my mare that got hurt on a broodmare lease.
I personally choose to aquire no fee for their use of her. They pay for all care of her, breed her, and make whatever they want to off her foals. It is in our contract that she is given back to me infoal to one of their studs-- my choice went the time comes, so I suppose that is my "payment".
I just wanted her taken care of as she has an injury and history of COPD, so her care was my top priority not getting money out of her. We did a 3 year lease through AQHA as is it is $100 whether you do it for 1 or 3 years. In our contract though it is guarenteed 1 year use but I am able to request her back after that before the 3 years is up. Through AQHA though it made the most sense to get the most bang for the buck as I plan for her to be there 2 years for sure. My contract wasn't really extensive as the people who are leasing her are amazing and they were just happy to get the opportunity to get a few babies out of her. I got my contract offline and customized it to my needs.
Most broodmare leases I have heard of when I was asking around, there is no fee so long that the leasee pays all care on the mare, often times just the mare is given back in foal.
ETA: They paid AQHA lease fee, 5 panel testing and came and picked my mare up.
