Veteran Posts: 193 Location: USA	My mom wants to start barrel racing with me and she said when I'm going around a barrel my inside leg (The leg closest to the barrel) Should stay off the horse while the outside leg should be kept on his side. I was always taught and told to keep my inside leg on the horse to keep him from moving on top of the barrel. I keep my leg on my horse side going into the turn but then going around the back side and coming out my heels are down and I'm pushing my horse to the next. Where should your inside and outside legs be while barrel racing both in practice and running and why? Thank you~

You get what you give Posts: 13030 Location: Texas	I use my inside leg if I feel i need more room or if I really want them wrapping around it. I will use outside leg if I feel I need to push them in. When I'm making a competitive run my muscle memory and adrenaline kicks in and I'm not consciously thinking about what my legs are doing. they are doing all that, but I couldn't tell you unless I watched the videos back!

"aint no Barbie" Posts: 2272 Location: san antonio texas	Outside leg and the reason why... outside leg pressure keeps your hind end in line with the shoulder. Alot of turns are done improperly with the rear end outside of the shoulder going into your barrel when ideally the rear end should stay in line with the front end. Outside leg will help this. Inside leg will have a tendency to push that hindquarters to the outside of the front end. I rarely use inside leg and it's only to loosen the rib cage when needed. Everyone has their own wasy of doing things, this is how I ride and train.

Elite Veteran Posts: 972 Location: Texas!	Dena Kirkpatrick teaches inside leg to drive the inside leg up under them for her training and that is how I work circles at home. Teach them to drive around my inside leg. Outside leg only if they act like they want to step out on me.
